Newly Released Information Reveals How A Five Year Old Jackson County Boy Was Murdered

An arrest citation reveals new information about how a five-year-old Jackson County boy was murdered. According to an arrest citation for Lonnie Jay Belt, Belt admitted to taking Jessica Durham and her son, James Spoonamore, against their will. He told police he took them to a secluded wooded area on Friday morning. Police say Belt then assaulted Durham and pushed her off a cliff. The citation also says Belt then admitted to taking the boy to a separate area. It was there that he struck the five-year-old in the head multiple times with a metal object. Police say Belt then left Spoonamore’s body which was found by State Police on Monday morning around 180 feet off Sparks Ridge Road. His body was found less than a mile from where hikers found Durham. Durham survived the attack, however, family says she is currently in critical condition at UK Chandler Medical Center. The family says says Jessica's husband became worried about his wife and stepson when he returned home from a doctor's appointment and his family was gone. Police charged Belt with murder after finding Spoonamore's body. They also charged him with assault, two counts of kidnapping, and evidence tampering for an attack on the boy's mother. Belt is scheduled to appear in court on September 18, for a preliminary hearing. Family and friends of the victims are planning on having a vigil on Saturday night. It will be held at Bond Memorial Park in McKee at eight.
