Teen Shoots Man In Laurel County

Laurel County Sheriff John Root says a man was shot by a teenager in London. Deputies say 38 year old Timothy D. Smith was outside his home when he was shot once in the leg by a 16-year-old boy. The teenager was armed with a .45 caliber pistol. The teen ran away and was caught an hour later. The shooting happened off Slate Lick Road. Public Information Officer Gilbert Acciardo said the teenager was found less than a mile away. Police say the teenager went to Smith's home to talk about a stolen weapon and during the conversation, the teenager began shooting. He also fired on Smith's mobile home, where several people lived. The 16-year-old was charged with assault (first-degree), wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence and giving false identifying information. He was lodged in Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Facility. Smith was taken to the UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of what police say is a non-life threatening injury.
