Boone Trace 250th Commemorative Relay Stops in London May 22–23

The Boone Trace 250th Commemorative Relay is making its way through London, Kentucky on May 22 and 23, and everyone’s invited to take part in this two-day tribute to history at Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park and Downtown London.

This special event marks 250 years since Daniel Boone and his Axemen carved the original trail into Kentucky. Hikers are retracing that path, passing a symbolic ax from team to team as they travel from Kingsport, TN to Fort Boonesborough, KY. The commemorative hike began on April 23 and will conclude on June 7.

Day One: Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park

When the hikers reach Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Park on the afternoon of Thursday, May 22, they’ll be welcomed with a Passing of the Ax Ceremony to honor Boone’s journey and the people who helped shape Kentucky’s early frontier.

Locals and guests are encouraged to gather at the museum and adjacent shelters to welcome the hikers as they make their way to the ceremonial stop.  At the time of this release, the hikers plan to arrive at Levi Jackson around 2:00p.m.  Adjusted times may be announced early in the morning on the day of arrival. Please stay tuned to VIsitLondonKY and Levi Jackson Wilderness Road Facebook Pages for updates.

Local officials will offer remarks on the historic moment, and everyone will gather at the shelters near the Mountain Life Museum for a lively and informative talk from Ron Nicholas, local historian and park guide. All Visitors will enjoy free museum admission during the event which has served as a great chance to step back in time and explore Kentucky pioneer life for decades.

Then it’s off to McHargue’s Mill, where Ron will demonstrate how the historic water-powered mill works. Each hiker will receive a complimentary bag of fresh-ground cornmeal as a keepsake of the journey. Guests can purchase the cornmeal at the museum shop.

The day of hiking will conclude at Levi Jackson and continue through London the following day.

Day Two: Downtown London- Laurel County Courthouse

On Thursday, May 23, the Boone Trace hikers will continue their journey into the heart of downtown London to the Laurel County Courthouse.

There, they’ll be greeted with a warm welcome from local officials, recognizing the significance of the journey and the legacy it represents.

Bring your family, wave them in, and be part of this unique celebration that honors Kentucky’s past while inspiring future generations.
