Virginia Fugitive Arrested by Laurel County Police After Chase and Shots Fired

Laurel County Sheriff John Root and London Police Chief Chuck Johnson report a federal fugitive from Virginia was arrested after reportedly shooting at police. It all started when the US Marshals Service tried to arrest 71-year-old Byron Howard in the Keavy area of Laurel County. Howard led police on a chase. The chase ended when Howard left the road and hit a tree on Moberly Bend Road. Police say Howard shot two times at them before surrendering. No officers were injured during the incident. Howard was taken to Baptist Health in Corbin for cardiac issues. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, wanton endangerment and gun possession by a convicted felon. Howard is to be lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center after his release from the hospital. The Corbin Police Department and Laurel County Constable’s Office also assisted.
